I’m thrilled to share that our Erasmus Mundus Master’s in Journalism, Media, and Globalisation has been awarded renewed Erasmus funding for the next five years — supporting the next chapter of our internationally recognized joint-degree program. For nearly twenty years, Mundus Journalism has brought together leading universities, top scholars, and future journalists from around the world to explore how journalism both shapes and is shaped by global change. This new funding allows us to respond meaningfully to the realities facing journalism today: conflict and disasters, polarization, climate-driven crises, mis/disinformation accelerated by AI, and growing threats to press freedom and safety — preparing graduates to report with accuracy, courage, and care.
✳️ At the University of Amsterdam, the Mundus Journalism programme plays a central role within the Graduate School of Communication (GSC – for which I serve as director). It exemplifies GSC’s commitment to connecting research excellence with real-world media practice — preparing students to think critically, act ethically, and contribute meaningfully to the global public sphere. ✳️
Building on our long-running strengths, the renewed program introduces:
- A new Crisis & Conflict specialization that deepens analytical and practical skills for high-risk, high-complexity reporting.
- A dedicated Resilience Committee to strengthen student wellbeing, mentoring, and pedagogical support throughout the two-year joint degree.
The program continues to be delivered collaboratively across Aarhus University (coordinator), the University of Amsterdam, LMU Munich, City, University of London, and Charles University — connecting students with five vibrant media ecosystems and a truly global classroom.
As Director of the UvA specialization, I’m incredibly proud of our team and deeply grateful to the European Commission for recognizing the continued value and urgency of this program.
